Thinking about waking up with perfectly defined eyes every day? An eyeliner tattoo is a game changer for many of us, offering smudge-proof perfection without the daily hassle. But before you lie back in that chair, there’s a crucial step to ensure your safety and the longevity of your beautiful new eyeliner: a quick check-in with your eye doctor.
A professional permanent makeup artist will always put your health first. Beyond the standard questions about glaucoma, a good artist needs to know about a range of other eye conditions. These can impact not only the safety of the procedure but also how well the pigment heals. Here’s a look at some of the most common eye health issues that require a chat with your optometrist before your appointment.
Dry Eye Syndrome
If you suffer from dry, gritty, or irritated eyes, you may have Dry Eye Syndrome. This condition can be a concern for an eyeliner tattoo for a couple of reasons. The procedure itself can temporarily increase eye sensitivity, and the aftercare process may be more challenging. Your optometrist can advise you on the best way to manage your symptoms before and after your appointment to ensure a more comfortable experience and a better healed result.
Blepharitis
Blepharitis is a common condition that causes inflammation of the eyelids, often with crusty buildup. Because this affects the very area we’ll be tattooing, it is considered a contraindication for a procedure. The skin on the eyelid needs to be healthy and clear for the pigment to be properly implanted and to avoid any risk of infection. If you have a history of blepharitis, your optometrist can help you get it under control before we can move forward with your eyeliner tattoo.
Styes, Chalazions, & Pink Eye (Conjunctivitis)
This one is non-negotiable! An active stye (a red, painful lump on your eyelid), a chalazion (a firm lump often caused by a blocked oil gland), or conjunctivitis (pink eye) are all active eye infections. It is unsafe and unprofessional to perform an eyeliner tattoo while any of these conditions are present. We must reschedule your appointment until the infection is completely gone and you have received a medical clearance from your doctor.
Other Eye Conditions and Surgeries
Even conditions that seem unrelated, like severe allergies, or recent procedures like LASIK or cataract surgery, can affect the skin and healing process. An allergist or your surgeon can provide valuable insight and give us the green light to proceed. For instance, if you’ve recently had eye surgery, your eyes are still in a delicate healing phase, and your doctor will recommend a specific waiting period before you can safely get a tattoo.
Your Health is the Priority
For an eyeliner tattoo to heal beautifully and last for years, the canvas (your eyelids!) needs to be healthy. These medical considerations aren’t meant to deter you; they are in place to protect you and ensure the integrity of your results. A responsible artist will always prioritize your health over an appointment, and a cancellation or reschedule for medical reasons is always understood.
Before your appointment, take a good look at your eye health. If you have any of the conditions mentioned above or any other eye-related concerns, call your optometrist. It’s the most important first step toward getting the stunning, flawless eyeliner you desire, safely and beautifully.
