Nanobrows & Pregnancy/Breastfeeding: Why We Wait

  1. Risk of Infection (Even if Minimal):
    • Any time the skin is broken (as it is during a tattoo procedure), there’s a risk of infection. While reputable PMU studios follow strict sterilization protocols, the immune system can be slightly altered during pregnancy. Any infection, even a minor one, during pregnancy carries potential risks for the baby and could necessitate medications that might not be ideal.
  2. Pain & Stress Response:
    • While nanobrows are generally well-tolerated with topical numbing, the procedure can still induce a level of stress or discomfort. During pregnancy, it’s best to avoid unnecessary stressors. Your body is already working overtime!
  3. Topical Anesthetics/Numbing Creams:
    • The numbing creams used contain lidocaine and other ingredients that can be absorbed by the body. While the absorption rate is typically low, there is not enough conclusive research on the safety of these chemicals passing through the placenta to the fetus, or into breast milk. Reputable artists err on the side of extreme caution here.
  4. Hormonal Influences & Pigment Stability:
    • During Pregnancy: Your body experiences a massive surge and fluctuation in hormones. These hormonal shifts can significantly impact how your skin accepts and retains pigment.
      • Unpredictable Color Retention: Hormones can lead to unexpected color results (pigment pulling cool or warm, or not retaining well at all). Imagine getting your dream nanobrows, only for them to heal a completely different shade or disappear quickly!
      • Hyperpigmentation: Hormonal changes can also make pregnant skin more prone to hyperpigmentation (darker spots), which could affect the area around the brow tattoo.
    • During Breastfeeding: While the hormonal impact might be less dramatic than during pregnancy, your body is still undergoing significant changes. Pigment retention can still be unpredictable.
  5. Swelling and Sensation:
    • Many pregnant women experience increased swelling, including in the face. This can make the brow area more sensitive and also affect the accuracy of the brow mapping and design during the procedure.
  • “What if I’m not showing yet?” The risks apply from conception, long before a baby bump appears.
  • “What if I just won’t tell you I’m pregnant/breastfeeding?” This is a huge disservice to yourself and your baby. A reputable artist will always ask, and knowingly proceeding with the procedure puts both you and the artist at risk.
  • “But I saw someone online who got it!” Unfortunately, not all artists adhere to best practices. Ethical artists prioritize client safety above all else. Just because someone did it doesn’t mean it’s safe or recommended.
  • After Pregnancy: Once you’ve given birth.
  • After Breastfeeding: Once you have completely finished breastfeeding.
  • Waking up with perfectly defined brows, no effort required.
  • Looking refreshed even on those sleepless nights.
  • Saving precious minutes from your makeup routine that you can now spend cuddling your little one (or catching a quick nap!).
